Why having an accountability partner for your business is so powerful

Why having an accountability partner for your business is so powerful

I have spoken about it a lot on social media. I love having an accountability partner for my business and for my private life, especially when I want to achieve something specific.

I actually only started hearing this term a few years ago. I guess I knew the word, but not that it was an official term to say and use. So, just in case you haven’t heard of it either, having an accountability partner means you appoint someone who will hold you accountable on certain things, goals you want to achieve or things you want to work on.

So that’s what it means, having someone who holds you accountable and - if agreed - you do the same in return.

If you are like me and are looking at your computer screen a lot you will love these screensavers that I’ve created for you!

I always have a quote on all my screensavers and desktop images so I remind myself to reach higher, to do better, to be a better person, to be positive, to be grateful and of so many more things. It is like my mini vision board. I look at these quotes all the time and just like a vision board they keep reminding me of who I want to be and what I want to do.

Why I changed my business name to my personal name

Why I changed my business name to my personal name

Two weeks ago I made the decision to change my business name MNFL Design to my personal Name Emilia Ohrtmann. I had been toying with this idea for a long time but I could not decide and commit. I was kind of clinging onto the name MNFL Design because it has such meaning for me and also because I have gained some sort of recognition with it and I also think I was a bit scared of the reasons why I wanted to change it. So two weeks ago I met a business coach and during that meeting I made the final decision and continue what I had already started on my instagram. This business is actually about me and it just makes more sense to just use my name.

The difference between a dream and a goal

The difference between a dream and a goal

I believe in huge dreams. I think we should all dream big. Dreams are endless and nobody can tell us what we are allowed to dream about and what not.

I also believe very strongly in goal setting. If you actually want to achieve your dreams or anything, one of the best tools is to set just one specific but attainable goal at a time and work towards it consistently.

However what is actually the difference between a dream and a goal?

Six tips for better time management

Six tips for better time management

I am a mom to four kids, I am a wife, I am an entrepreneur, I am a blogger, I am training for triathlons six days of the week, I am volunteering at my kids school and I do so many other things like all moms and all entrepreneurs do. Oh and by the way, I need a lot of sleep ;-)

And I get this question a lot: “How do you do it all?”

So in this blog post today I wrote down my top 6 time management tips, my main rules I follow to make the most of my time while still sleeping 7-8 hours every night.

Why you should display your prices on your website

Why you should display your prices on your website

When I speak to my customers there is always a point when the question arises whether or not they should display their prices on their website.

If you have an online shop there is no question about it, of course you display your prices. However if you have service based business or a product based business but don’t have an online shop - may be you just want to display your products somewhere - the same question still arises. Should you display your prices on your website?

When talking to my clients I realized that many are very hesitant of putting their prices on their website. They feel it’s like putting a label on them.  I get so many answers like

“What if I am too expensive?”

“What if my competition sees the prices?”

“My price depends on the customer and I always do custom quotes.”

“Nobody else does it.”

In this blog post I wrote down 5 reasons why you should display your prices on your website.

And I will be answering your above questions!

What is personal branding?

What is personal branding?

When we think about a brand we mostly think about a logo and a website may be. We are thinking of big companies who are well established and well known brands. However EVERY business, whatever its size is a brand and should be branded well.
Read here what branding is and why it is so important.

In addition the word personal branding is also used more and more these days and often people don't really understand what that actually means and that personal branding is not constrained to celebrities.

In this blog post I want to write about what personal branding is, why it is so important and how you can implement it for yourself immediately.

My number ONE website design TIP

My number ONE website design TIP

There are many things you can look out for when designing your website. I have written about a lot of them in the past.

However if you are just starting out, you are probably having a slight overwhelm at the moment. You might be doing everything yourself and you know you need a website but you don't know where to start. I totally get you. I have been there as well!

That is why I thought about the one tip that I would give you for your website. And to be honest this also applies to your business in general. Especially in the beginning.

When an why you should use your own name for your business

What I learned from starting three small businesses

What I learned from starting three small businesses

I have started and run two other small businesses before I started MNFL Design in 2015. The first one I founded in 2009 and the second one in 2013. And both those businesses I started with a partner before I decided to go solo for MNFL Design.

I have learned a lot along the way with my three businesses and I’ve run into many problems as well. And I’ve also watched other start-ups and I’ve seen many ways of how to go about starting and running a business, I’ve seen in which areas they did well and where they had problems. Especially now with MNFL Design and helping other female entrepreneurs start their business.

Therefore I decided to write down my 6 key things I learned from starting a small business. And these things are totally personal, they might be different for you but they might also give you something to think about and help you when you are starting out as an entrepreneur.

How to choose your brand colors

How to choose your brand colors

I have recently written a blog post about the power of using one bold color for your brand consistently. I used the example of Tiffany among others.

Recently I got the question on how to choose this one color? And what to do when the color you want to use is already used by a brand that is much bigger than you are?

So in this blog post I want to write about how I choose colors for a brand and if you want to use only one or two main colors, how to make sure you are choose the right one.

How to differentiate your brand

How to differentiate your brand

There are many ways to be different from other brands. Of course there is always your

product or service that is different, your story behind it is different, your brand and your logo will look different, your images will be different.

However how do you really differentiate your brand from all the others out there? Now with the world having become so small and brands being accessable basically from everywhere it might seem so difficult to stand out from the crowd. There are so many brands on social media and the internet and it might seem overwhelming. It seems like there is always someone else who is doing what you are doing and who is similar. However I am telling you there is room for you and you are different. Not only because of yourself as a person and your unique story (link) but I think there is one huge way to differentiate your brand from everybody else. And that is being CONSISTENT!

Owning one color for your business

Owning one color for your business

In recent weeks I talked about why it is important to show the heart of a company: the owner! Who it actually is that started the business as well as the why and the how. By telling the unique story of the founder of the business you will set your business apart just because nobody else has the same story. And by knowing the person behind a business, customers are more likely to connect on a personal level and they will remember your business over others! This is also part of branding!

However there is another very important aspect of branding and I often feel that people forget about it or shy away from it. And that is: choosing ONE brand color!

What is a Mission statement and why it is so important?

What is a Mission statement and why it is so important?

Having a mission statement is essential for every business. It helps us to stay on track and focus on the most important. However I know that many of my clients and others I have talked to have trouble defining their mission statement. It sounds so simple as it usually is just one sentence but once they start to think about it, it becomes more complicated. How can we put everything we do into just one sentence?

Well, you don't have to put EVERYTHING into one sentence. However you really have to sit down and define your values and goals and objectives and what the main purpose of your company actually is. Once you have done that it will seem more obvious what your actual mission is. And then you can easily put it into one (or two) sentence(s).

Why it is ok to want to earn money with your business

Why it is ok to want to earn money with your business

You have a small business or you are thinking of starting one. You have a great product or service idea and you are very passionate about it. You might also have another driver like supporting a good cause or wanting to spread the word about something that is important. You will want to help people with your product or service.

And of course you have passion. When you start your own business you should always have passion for what you do. It will make working so much easier and work will actually feel less like work.

However I hear you when you are saying: I also want to earn money with my business. And in this post I want to write about why it is ok to want to earn money with your business. Or why it is ok to admit that earning money is the main reason why you start a business. It might be the only reason and that is also ok. Also as a female entrepreneur.

How to find the right name for your small business

How to find the right name for your small business

From my own experience and also from working with other people, finding the right name for a small business can go two directions. Either you have known the right name for a long time and there is no doubt about it OR you can’t decide on a name and think about it for a long time, you read about it, get feedback and find it a super hard task which might even delay you in starting your small business.

Finding the right name is very important! No pressure ;-) The name of your small business will go with you a long way, it sets the tone and direction for your brand. It gives a first impression to customers and your customers will see, type and click on all the time. And don’t forget you will need to say it over and over again and often it’s the first thing you say to a customer! Plus the name also differentiates you from your competitors.
And although I would not say you should get too hung up on finding the right name, it is one of the first very important steps you have to take when starting a business.

Therefore I have written down a checklist of how to find the right name for your small business.

My 10 step roadmap of starting a small business

My 10 step roadmap of starting a small business

When I started my first two businesses we did a lot of planning in the beginning. We had great product ideas and we started with lots of designs and big websites which showcased all of our products. We designed those products how we liked them and what was, from our point of view, missing in the market.
Looking back now I wish I had done a few things differently and in a different order.
Therefore I have put together my 10 steps of starting a small business. This list shows what is most important and why and what can wait a little bit or needs some additional thought. Every business is slightly different of course but I think overall these steps are the same for every small business, you might just need to add some things like for example the legal side of setting up and registering your company.

6 reasons why you need to think big for your small business

6 reasons why you need to think big for your small business

Including MNFL Design I have started three small businesses. The first one was in 2009 in the US. Together with my friend and business partner we designed German inspired children’s wear and accessories. The second one was in Dubai in 2013 and again together with someone else we started importing and distributing high quality, leather children’s shoes from Portugal. And in 2015 I started MNFL Design.

Overall I’ve gone through a huge learning curve and made some big mistakes. I was also more or less serious about being an entrepreneur at different stage of my life. For example MNFL Design started very slowly and only after the birth of my fourth daughter I began to think big.

Over the year however I have come to the conclusion that it only makes sense to start a small business if you think big! You need to have big dreams and visions, otherwise you will never get where you (secretly) want to be.

However the first step you need to take is seriously ask yourself, and may be your partner, why you want to start this business. Do you want to start a proper business or is it more like a slightly bigger hobby?

If you decide you want to start a business you have to THINK big in order to BE big!

How to use Canva

How to use Canva

One of the questions I get asked most by previous clients is how they can use their branding and design their own graphics for let’s say social media without having to ask me all the time. Of course you can design nice graphics with powerpoint or keynote but it can be quite complicated sometimes. And today I  want to introduce you to a program called Canva, which is much easier to use!

Canva is a free online graphic design program, it is accessible to anyone and very user-friendly. It has lot’s of free templates and ready to use graphics as well as images. There are also some templates that cost money but they are very cheap. Of course it has some limitations in comparison to for example Adobe Illustrator but for a free tool for basic designs it is amazing.
