Why you need professional photographs for your website

Website visitors don’t want to read a lot, they scan the home page above the fold and decide whether they will find the information they are looking for or not.

There are many aspects that play a role in these first few seconds. One of them is whether they like a site visually. And even if you think you are not a visual person you will sibconsciously decide whether you like the look of the website or not.

Using professional photographs is a great way to bring a message across without using much text.

90% of information transmitted to our brain is visual! Visualisation works from a human perspective because we respond to and process visual data better than any other type of data. The human brain processes images 60,000 times fast than text!!! (source)

That's why you need professional photographs for your website!

A big and eye-catching, high-quality image on the home page can make a website stand out immediately. If you add a headline that speaks to your target customers mind, you have caught your visitors attention.

Visitors don’t have the time to read through a lot of text on websites. They scan the content and look at any visuals available. In that moment the whole brand speaks to the customer. And this is a combination of the logo, colors, headlines, content and imagery.

Big brands like Apple and for example many car companies use mainly images and very little text to bring their message across to the visitors. You are guided intuitively through their website.

Here are some good examples:

Build trust and show expertise

With your website you want to build trust and show your potential customers that you are the best and most professional place to get what they are looking for. Your images on your website need to portray that. They need to transfer the companies values and the benefit a customer will get from staying on the website and eventually buying from your company.

Your images not only need to be taken professionally but also have appealing colors to your target customers. And that’s another reason why you need to know if you are targeting men or women with your website.
In many cultures men are more attracted to cooler colors like blues and greens and women are more attracted to softer and warmer colors like pastel tones. So you photographs on your website should match your chosen colors for your brand. Everything together will speak directly to your target customer.

Tip: Determine your brand colors according to your target market and then match your professional images.

Imagery on the about page

Let me start by saying: every about page needs to have an image with people! It adds a face to a name, the brand!

Having high quality images is not only important on your home page but just as important on all other pages. Having a well taken photograph of yourself  that has your target customer in mind can help build trust and make you look like an expert.

About pages are often overlooked but are actually one of the pages that people like to click on most often. They want to find out more about the brand and the person or people behind it.

That's why I believe it is essential to invest in a great image of yourself. This investment will be well worth it and can take you a long way! You can use this image not only for your website but also for your social media accounts, your newsletter and any other marketing material where you want to build trust by showing yourself.

Another aspect to remember is that it is always good to show yourself in your work surroundings. That again creates trust and shows that you are an expert.

So no selfie on the beach when you are actually a cook for example ;-)

    Imagery on product pages

The same is true for your product page. A good image builds trust and portrays the quality of the product. Make sure your product is the focus of the image and there are no distracting backgrounds or items in the photograph. Most companies choose a plane white background for product photography and that’s because it looks clean and the least distracting.

Overall make sure your images are:

    • well lit,

    • sharp (not blurry),

    • good resolution (not pixelated)
