How to write a compelling about page for your website

How to write a compelling about page for your website

I get this question asked all the time: can you help me with the copy for my website?

And the answer is, yes and no. I am not a copywriter, I am sorry. Copywriting is a skill and it’s actually a job, you can hire a copywriter. Which is something I would definitely do if you can. I have also hired one for my own website initially! So, no I can’t write it for you. But what I can do is point you in the right direction and of course support you with headlines and also give my input on how I would do it.

In this blog post however I want to write about the about page specifically as many people find it so hard to write about themselves and might want to leave it out completely. And others love writing about themselves and describing on long paragraphs who they are and what they want, do and desire. Both is not ideal.

My brand and website design process for Marcella Moohan

Marcella Moohan, a business writer, editor and copywriter who now lives in Spain, approached me a few months ago about a logo as well as a website for her business. At that time she was still living in Dubai and we met up in person and clicked immediately. We have now also partnered up so that I work with her whenever I need a copywriter for my clients websites and she has done most of the copy on my own website as well.

She wanted the logo as well as the website to be quite minimal and professional and she wanted to use a serif font as that matches the writer style but was open about anything else. Her personal favorite color was green so I kept that in mind as well. For the website she again wanted it to be minimal and had some ideas ideas about scrolling in mind.

As with all my projects I started off with a research phase to find out more about her industry as well as her style.

How to write copy that converts for your website

Everyone can write. However not everyone can actually write good copy for a website. Writing a letter and writing the copy for a website is not the same. Also just the prospect of having to write a marketing piece for a website or a catalogue can make people’s minds go blank.

Many of my clients ask me if I can write the text for their websites. And everytime I am super sorry to say that I don’t. My first language is not English and many of my native English clients can probably write better than me.

However more importantly I am not a copywriter. (I am not so sure I could write the copy for my clients in German to be honest.)

Copywriting is a skill and a profession and how to write good copy for a website that converts visitors into buyers takes time to learn. I am not saying that you can’t learn it and do it yourself, I just want to be honest that there are big differences out there when I look at websites.
